The deck already had a relationship with the house. What this Brookhaven renovation improves is its relationship with the ground below. Outdoor Makeover & Living Spaces replaced the decking, added staircases on both sides and refreshed an existing screened porch, bringing the upper and lower outdoor spaces into a more connected arrangement.

The work at Bluffhaven Way also included leveling the side yard, drainage improvements, lighting and a gravel path. These are practical changes, but they explain much of the finished garden's appeal. There is somewhere to go when a person leaves the deck, and more than one way to get there.

Reusing the sheltered room

The screened porch remains a furnished outdoor room beside the house. Replacement screening renewed that enclosure rather than starting the entire structure again. Red cushions give the space a distinct character, while views through the screens keep it connected to the garden.

Outside, composite decking provides the open platform. A cooking area with a grill, sink and preparation counter puts food close to the gathering spaces. The kitchen and porch serve different needs, but both are reached from the same circulation network.

Making the lower yard count

The side-yard work turns a narrow area into a more usable strip beside the house. Planting and stone edging define it, while the stairs provide a visible connection back to the deck. The gravel path continues the route around the property.

The wider photograph is the most revealing. Stairs, posts, porch and lawn form several layers, yet their connections are easy to follow. The project gains space through access and organization as well as through new construction.

For a raised deck, that distinction matters. The ground underneath and beside it can remain an awkward remainder, or it can become part of the outdoor plan. Here, the routes between levels give the existing house and its garden more ways to work together.

At home

Access can be the most valuable part of a renovation: a second route may make existing space easier to use.
