The fireplace has two addresses. One face belongs to the kitchen and bar; the other looks toward a curved sitting area. In this Barrington project from Schmechtig Landscapes, a single substantial structure helps organize two different ways to gather outside.
Its pale finish stands apart from the darker pergola beams and the planting around the terrace. Small areas of exposed stone give the surface texture without turning the entire chimney into a heavy masonry pattern. From the wider view, the fireplace is the garden's most recognizable object, but it does not require everyone to sit on the same side.
Sharing the center
The kitchen counter meets the fireplace on one side. Stools face the work surface, allowing conversation near the cook. Around the corner, softer seating gathers in front of the second fire opening. The turn is small, but the change in furniture makes the two areas feel distinct.
This is a different arrangement from placing a freestanding fire feature in the middle of a large terrace. The hearth is part of the boundary between rooms. People can occupy both sides without the main circulation route cutting through a single circle of chairs.
A lighter structure overhead
Timber beams extend across the outdoor space, repeating the warm color of the surrounding details. Their open rhythm contrasts with the solid chimney. Planting softens the outer edge of the terrace, particularly around the sitting area, where the garden comes close to the furniture.
The project is worth studying for that balance of mass and openness. The fireplace establishes a center; the pergola defines space without enclosing it; the planted perimeter keeps the hardscape from becoming the whole view. Two outdoor rooms emerge from those few elements, with the hearth doing useful work on both sides.
At home
A shared focal point can connect two outdoor rooms while allowing each to have its own furniture and purpose.
